The Supreme Court’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais didn’t come out of nowhere. It’s the latest move in a long American pattern – one we’ve seen before.
Tomorrow at 12 PM ET, we’re hosting a live conversation with two of the foremost voices on the history of voting rights and the Supreme Court:
Dr. Carol Anderson is the Charles Howard Candler Professor of African American Studies at Emory University and the author of One Person, No Vote: How Voter Suppression Is Destroying Our Democracy and White Rage. Her work traces how every expansion of Black political power in this country has been met with a backlash designed to take it away.
Lawrence Goldstone is a historian and the author of several books on the Supreme Court, including On Account of Race: The Supreme Court, White Supremacy, and the Ravaging of African American Voting Rights, which won the 2021 Lillian Smith Book Award. His work documents the Court’s long history of dismantling the very rights it was meant to protect.
Together, they’ll dig into:
What the Callais ruling actually does to the Voting Rights Act
Why the VRA was needed in the first place — and what the country looked like before it
The parallels between this moment and the post-Reconstruction period that followed the first Redemption, when Black political power was systematically dismantled state by state
What history tells us about what comes next, and what’s possible from here
This isn’t just a legal story. It’s a historical one — and understanding the pattern is how we break it.
