Southern States Rushing to Redraw Maps After the Callais Decision: The US Supreme Court has allowed Alabama to use its 2023 congressional map, eliminating one of Alabama's majority Black districts (AL-02), which is currently held by Representative Shomari Figures (D). SCOTUS ruled that the lower judicial panel did not give the legislature the presumption of good faith and that it was too close to the election to change the map. Alabama Gov Kay Ivey (R) also voided the May 19 primary election results and called for an August 11 special election for two State Senate districts after a court allowed the state to revert to its previously struck down discriminatory legislative map.
STATE ACTIVITY
California • Trump Claims, Without Proof, That There Was Cheating In the State’s Voting Process: President Trump is claiming, without evidence, that the lengthy counting process in California means Democrats are stealing the election. Trump also claimed that the counting process was “Under investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles.” Additionally, Spencer Pratt (R), a reality television star endorsed by Trump, is currently in place to make a runoff for Los Angeles mayor, but only 62% of the vote had been counted as of Thursday afternoon. Trump’s posts have potentially laid the groundwork for his supporters to doubt or contest the election should Nithya Raman (D) end up ahead of Pratt. Separately, the Los Angeles Registrar and County Clerk as well as the police are looking into two cases of possible election interference after burned ballots were found inside a drop box and a vote center was vandalized.
Colorado • Tina Peters Was Released From Prison And Immediately Claimed “Democrats Are Going to Cheat” In the Midterms: Last month, after months of pressure from President Trump and election deniers, Gov Jared Polis (D) commuted former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters’ sentence. On Monday, Peters, who had been convicted on multiple felony counts for her role in a voting system breach, was released. Peters almost immediately appeared on Steve Bannon’s podcast where she doubled down on her election conspiracies and said, “I know that the Democrats are going to cheat. No one’s really addressing the problem that I spent my time in prison as retribution for, and that was exposing the election machines that allow the votes to be flipped.”
North Carolina • GOP County Elections Board Members Said They Were Pressured to Reject a College Early Voting Site: Republican members of the Jackson County Board of Elections said during a meeting that they were pressured to reject a plan for an early voting site on Western Carolina University’s campus. One member who voted for the college site, Jay Pavey, said that he was told by the GOP that if he did not vote against the site, that the party would “do whatever they have to do to remove [him] from the board.” Board Chair Bill Thompson, who was the sole vote against the WCU site, said that he was asked by the state auditor’s office to vote against the site. North Carolina law requires early voting plans to be unanimously approved, so the plan will now be sent to the State Board of Elections, which has a Republican majority, for final approval.
Wisconsin • Federal Officials Continue to Investigate 2020 Election: At least two Milwaukee police officers were interviewed this week about the 2020 presidential election. If federal officials advance an investigation, it’s possible that poll books and nearly 180,000 absentee ballots with attached ID numbers could be turned over to investigators. Since state law requires absentee ballots counted at a central counting facility to include poll list numbers, the data could be matched with poll book information to identify voters.

Creator of EIN-Backed Voter Challenge Tool EagleAI Presented New Program to Georgia State Election Board: Dr. Rick Richards, the creator of an error-ridden EIN-backed voter challenge tool EagleAI, presented his new program, ELLY, to the Georgia State Election Board (SEB). In his presentation, Richards claimed that 2.8 million Georgia registrations have a problem. Richards pitched ELLY as an alternative to ERIC and urged the SEB to require counties to use ELLY and for SEB investigations. The SEB recently quietly hired Jason Frazier, a mass challenger who helped Richards develop EagleAI, as an investigator.
